Three degrees

That title is a weather report if you don't know. Today's high is three degrees, that's besides the point because the news station likes to mention the daily high in an almost under-your-breath whisper and get right to the business of that wind chill factor. Get out the graphs and charts boys because it's going to be cold enough the freeze the plumbing tonight. So, skip the three degree info and cast your eyes on this figure....-15 degrees. Please notice the minus sign there.

Today the school closed due to the cold. All the kids are here thinking that if they so much as poke their nose out the door it will fall off. What has the weatherman done to my kids? We are Canadian stock. I never heard of a school closing due to cold there before. Snow yes, but not cold. Let's imagine that the wind blew at a constant rate and that it felt like a continuous -15. In Canada that's about -24. In Canada -24 means maybe you should wear a hat, you might rethink wearing running shoes. If your in the eighth grade you still don't zip up your coat or wear mitts. When it gets to the -30 range then people start mentioning the cold in conversation.

So here are my kids, at home and feeling smug that the school board bought into the hyper-theatrics of the weatherman that saved them from the 15 yard walk to the bus stop.
